A bit about yourself (your role within your organization, where you live, your interests, etc.)
Hi All! I’m Kyra Marcano from Chicago, IL. I am the Dean of Curriculum & Instruction at Great Lakes Academy Charter School on the South East side of the city. This year my greatest initiative is implementing systems for tracking data and engaging teachers in making data driven decisions inside the classroom. Outside of school I enjoy —in no specific order— running, yoga, writing, music, and eating delicious food.
How you got into education
I am a first generation college graduate, and the first of my siblings to attend a traditional four year university. Growing up in Chicago, the public neighborhood schools were not always the best option, and my parents were very active in pursuing the best district schools for us to attend, and making sure we remained engaged in learning inside and outside of school. There was always an awareness my experience and school opportunities were not typical of kids even within my own neighborhood, and so I’ve found myself engaged in the work of changing that reality for future generations.
Why you’re here specifically, and how the community can help you
We are entering our third year of operation, and it’s very exciting to be part of the build up process! I would love to exchange ideas around SIS, standards based grading, data meetings, and hopefully meet some schools my staff can visit!
